Domain names and AI name search

A domain name is the address of your website and, usually, your email. You register it through a registrar for a year or more at a time and renew it to keep it. The registrar is not the same as the host: you can register a domain at one company and point it at a website hosted somewhere else.

The registrars here differ mostly in renewal prices, how they handle privacy, and how easy their DNS settings are to manage. Namecheap and Porkbun include privacy protection that hides your contact details from public lookup records. Cloudflare Registrar charges the registry price for domains already using Cloudflare. Squarespace Domains took over the domains that used to be at Google Domains.

AI shows up mainly in the naming step. Namelix and several registrar search pages suggest names from a short description of your business, and show which matching domains look available. They are useful for brainstorming, though the final choice should be short, easy to spell when said aloud, and checked against existing businesses and trademarks in your field.

Once you have a domain, protect it. Turn on auto-renew and two-factor sign-in, keep the account email on an address you will still have in five years, and note the renewal date. If a domain lapses, your website and email stop working, and recovering it can cost extra or fail if someone else registers it first.

If you might move hosts later, keeping the domain at an independent registrar makes the move simpler, because you only change where the domain points.

Choosing the ending is part of the decision. A .com is still what most people type by default, but a country ending such as .us or .ca, or a specific one such as .shop or .studio, can work when the .com is taken. Check the renewal price for the ending you pick, since some cost much more after the first year.

If you already own a domain with a host or builder, you do not need to move it to start. You can point it at a new site by changing its DNS records, and transfer it to a registrar later once the site is settled.

Write down where each domain is registered and when it renews, especially if you own several. A simple list prevents surprise expiries and makes it easy to hand the details to a developer.

Questions about domain names and ai name search

Does it matter which registrar I use?

Less than people think. Compare renewal prices, privacy protection, DNS tools and support. The domain works the same wherever it is registered, and you can transfer it later.

What is WHOIS privacy?

It hides your name, address and contact details from public domain lookup records. Many registrars include it free for eligible domains. Some domain endings do not allow it.

Can AI name generators find me a good name?

They are good at producing lots of options quickly. Shortlist a few, say them out loud, check they are easy to spell, and look for existing businesses or trademarks with similar names.

How do I avoid losing my domain?

Turn on auto-renew, keep a working payment method on file, use an account email you will not lose, and turn on two-factor sign-in at the registrar.
