About Cloudflare
Network service that sits in front of a website to add a CDN, DNS, SSL, firewall rules and bot protection, with a free plan.
Cloudflare sits between your visitors and your web host. Once your domain's nameservers point to Cloudflare, it serves cached copies of your pages from data centers around the world, handles SSL certificates, and filters traffic before it reaches your server.
The free plan covers DNS, a CDN, SSL and basic protection against attacks, which is enough for many small sites. Paid plans add a fuller web application firewall, more rules and image optimization. Cloudflare also uses machine learning in its bot detection, and it offers tools for blocking AI crawlers from your site.
Before switching nameservers, copy your existing DNS records, including email records, and check them after the move. Some hosts include Cloudflare or their own CDN already, so ask your host how the two work together.
